Richard Wagner's Impact on His World and Ours, 30.5.-2.6.2013, University of Leeds

To mark the 200th anniversary on 22 May 2013 of the birth of Richard Wagner, the School of Music, University of Leeds, in collaboration with Opera North will host the international conference 'Richard Wagner's Impact on His World and Ours' held on 30 May-2 June 2013.

Few aspects of late nineteenth-century and subsequent cultural developments remain untouched by Wagner's influence. The conference seeks to place this influence in context, embracing the multitude of artistic and non-artistic disciplines that have felt the composer's impact. The programme committee invites proposals for multi-disciplinary presentations and workshops that deal with any aspect of Wagner studies.

Song, Stage and Screen VII: The Musical’s Global Conquest, 2.-5.7.2012, University of Groningen, Netherlands

In July there is the annual conference of the academic journal, Studies in Musical Theatre, which is published by Intellect Press.

The New York Times has frequently reported on the increasingly global musical theatre community. Broadway flops are finding success in Europe and China's economic power is stimulating a musical theatre industry aspiring to enter the global market. This conference invites papers investigating the range of global contexts within which stage and film musicals are created, circulated and consumed. While much growth has occurred in recent decades, musicals have been circulated transnationally for more than a century, and forms such as the American musical developed out of a range of cultural influences.

VII. Symposion zur Filmmusikforschung, Schwerpunkt: Film Tanz Musik, 14.-16.6.2012, Universität Salzburg

Wenn im Sommer die Kieler Gesellschaft für Filmmusikforschung ihre Tagung in Zusammenarbeit mit der Abteilung Musik- und Tanzwissenschaft der Universität Salzburg durchführt, liegt es nahe, den Schwerpunkt auf das Dreieck Film-Tanz-Musik zu legen. Sowohl in der Tanzforschung hat der Film erstaunlicherweise fast ebenso wenig Beachtung gefunden wie der Tanz in der Filmmusikforschung. Wir erhoffen uns durch die Teilnahme von Film-, Tanz- und Musikforschern und Personen, die in der Praxis dieser Bereiche tätig sind, neue und wechselseitige fächerübergreifende Impulse und Fragestellungen.

11. Kongress der Gesellschaft für Theaterwissenschaft, "Sound und Performance", 4.-7.10.2012, Universität Bayreuth

Der Kongress zielt darauf ab, ein neues Spektrum der Fragen und Forschungsansätze unter dem Titel "Sound und Performance" erstmals zu versammeln und interdisziplinär zu diskutieren. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Annahme, dass 'Sound' und 'Performance' Begriffe sind, welche die Vorstellung dessen, was 'Musik' oder 'Theater' sei, grundsätzlich problematisieren. Sie sind also geeignet, dem Wandel und der Dynamik der akustischen Dimension von Aufführungen gerecht zu werden.

2. Call for Papers

CfP: WagnerWorldWide:Reflections, 12.-15.12.2013, The Research Institute for Music Theater Studies (Schloss Thurnau), University of Bayreuth

The Research Institute of Music Theatre Studies (Schloss Thurnau), University of Bayreuth, in collaboration with the University of South Carolina (USA) and the University of Bern (Switzerland), is convening an international conference between 12-15 December 2013 to conclude the www2013: projects.

The Conference will also continue to explore the topics already elaborated during the 2011-12 lecture series WagnerWorldWide:Bayreuth that inaugurated the project (the complete lecture series is available on YouTube).

The organizers welcome unusual, unexpected, and/or creative proposals which offer new and refreshing approaches to Wagner and that address the concept WagnerWorldWide:Reflections. Please send abstracts (250 words) in English by 31 July 2012. The conference language is English.

3. Call for Articles

CfA: Thurnauer Preis für Musiktheaterwissenschaft

Zum vierten Mal in der Geschichte des Forschungsinstituts für Musiktheater (fimt) an der Universität Bayreuth wird der Thurnauer Preis für Musiktheaterwissenschaft ausgelobt. Eingesandt werden können bereits veröffentlichte oder noch unveröffentlichte Aufsätze und Essays zu allen relevanten Themenbereichen: von der Oper zum Musical, vom Vaudeville oder der Revue zum Musik-Film und zur Filmmusik, vom Ballett über das Tanztheater zur Tanzperformance, von der Aufführungs-Analyse zur Analyse von Partituren oder Libretti (Einsendeschluss: 30. Mai 2013). Der Aufsatz sollte 18.000-27.000 Zeichen (ca. 10-15 Seiten) umfassen und nicht älter als zwei Jahre sein. Er kann auf Englisch, Deutsch, Französisch oder Italienisch verfasst sein. Der Preis besteht aus einem Geldpreis von 1500,- € und einer Einladung ins fimt zur offiziellen Preisverleihung.

CfA: Thurnau Award for Music Theatre Studies

Submissions are now being accepted for the Thurnau Award for Music Theatre Studies for young scholars which will be awarded the fourth time in 2013. We are looking for modern, creative and outstanding methodological approaches in music theatre studies, trying to encourage interesting topics in neglected fields of research. Please send in your stimulating academic article from 18.000-27.000 characters incl. blank spaces (10-15 pages) which can be written in English, German, French or Italian (Submission deadline: May 30th 2013). The essay may just be prepared for publication or already be published (not longer than 2 years ago). The Award consists of a cash gift of 1500,- € and of an invitation to the Thurnau Institute (fimt), where the award will be presented to the winner.
